The Hartman Literacy and Learning Center is a teaching, research and service center within 91黑料网's School of Education dedicated to improving literacy instruction and helping children who struggle with reading develop the skills they need to succeed.

Through the center's innovative programs, 91黑料网 undergraduate teachers-in-training work one-on-one with Milwaukee-area students while gaining valuable classroom experience. Faculty members provide supervision, review lesson plans and support research that advances effective literacy practices. The center also studies how literacy instruction impacts children's reading development and examines the long-term effectiveness of teacher preparation programs.

Transforming Lives Through Literacy

The Hartman Center provides free literacy support to more than 100 Milwaukee children each year through its after-school tutoring programs. Students receive individualized, phonics-based instruction designed to strengthen reading skills, improve comprehension and build confidence.

At the same time, future educators gain hands-on experience working with children, families and schools, helping them develop the skills needed to become effective literacy teachers in urban classrooms.

Participating students are transported from partner schools to 91黑料网 twice a week during the academic year, where they work one-on-one with 91黑料网 teacher candidates who are preparing to become elementary educators. Faculty members provide supervision and guidance, ensuring instruction is grounded in research-based literacy practices.

The impact of these programs extends far beyond reading scores. Students gain confidence in the classroom, discover new academic possibilities and begin to envision pathways to higher education. Many participants show significant improvements in literacy skills, and the experiences help foster a stronger sense of achievement and future opportunity.

By combining individualized support for children with hands-on training for future teachers, the Hartman Center creates meaningful educational outcomes for both learners and educators while strengthening literacy in the Milwaukee community.

Our Mission

The Hartman Literacy and Learning Center advances 91黑料网's Jesuit mission and the School of Education's commitment to Care for Knowledge, Profession and Person.

• Care for Knowledge: Research on the literacy and math development of children that attend our after-school tutoring program provides much-needed knowledge about how to help children at risk of failing because of poverty and lack of educational resources to learn to read. Our literacy project is unique because it involves children, their parents, classroom teachers and our undergraduate teachers in training. No other program in the country uses this model to examine the effects of intervention programs for young readers.
• Care for the Profession: Developing the professional identity of teachers in training and in-service teachers is exemplified by school visits by our undergraduate teachers in training, conferences with parents, and reports sent to parents and teachers. Our teachers in training are learning what it means to care for the child in the context of their families and schools.
• Care for the Person, especially in service to others: Our undergraduate teachers in training are learning that care for others doesn't mean a patronizing 鈥渓et me help you.鈥� Rather, it's a deep understanding of cultures other than one's own and a way to use differences to enhance learning for all. Likewise, we demonstrate care for our teachers in training by providing detailed constructive feedback.

Program Objectives

• Improve the literacy development of inner-city Milwaukee children, as measured by individual assessments of their reading abilities over time.
• Improve the involvement of families in the literacy development of their children by providing: materials for children to read with their parents and suggestions to help parents support their children's reading; literacy events where families hear well-known children's authors and read their materials; parent conferences where tutors help parents understand what we're teaching their children and how they can help; and celebratory events that acknowledge the children's participation in the project and present them with a book.
• Improve urban teacher education in literacy for those who are planning to teach or are already teaching in inner-city Milwaukee elementary schools as measured by questionnaires on literacy practices and videotaped lessons.
