The Education Deans of Greater Milwaukee (EDGM) is composed of leadership from institutions of higher education in the greater Milwaukee area. 

It is the mission of the EDGM is to leverage the assets of our individual institutions to support the continuous improvement of PK-21 education in the region. To accomplish this mission, we also engage others who share our common goals.

Strategic Priorities

  • Inspire community understanding of teaching as a valued profession and serve as a catalyst to expanding and enhancing the teacher pipeline for district, charter and choice schools through high quality teacher preparations programs
  • Use our collective voice to address federal/ state public policy shifts that undermine and/ or detract from performance and improvements in teacher preparation and expertise; pedagogy, instructional best practices, school leadership; and classroom management issues
  • Create strategic dialogues and public forums on urban school leadership issues and public policy solutions to capitalize on the expertise within EDGM and partner organizations
  • Support urban school leaders and administrators in improving PK-12 education via problem-solving forums and professional development coaching in collaboration with partner organizations
  • Use EDGM as a clearinghouse for ideas and as a 'knowledge repository' accessible to school leaders and educators
  • Identify and utilize quantitative and qualitative data to support knowledge sharing and 'lessons learned' between EDGM and its partner organizations

The EDGM is committed to a collective impact model that focuses on new strategic opportunities to improve educational leadership, teacher preparation, the development of positive school culture and environments, and developing and orchestrating a system of instructional guidance that builds capacity within our entire educational system(s). The ability to network through knowledge sharing, communication and cooperation, a sense of joint ownership, collective expertise, and consensus to act on mutual priorities is key to improving teacher recruitment and retention, school culture and environments, and positive outcomes for student achievement.

History

The Education Deans of Greater Milwaukee (EDGM) was formerly known as the Metropolitan Milwaukee Area Deans of Education (MMADE). EDGM is a unique and successful partnership model funded initially in 2013 through the Faye McBeath Foundation allowing nine diverse public and private higher education institutions to come together as equal partners under one umbrella with eleven community organization leaders with a shared vision to pursue strategies that meet the greater good of what works for all children regardless of community and socio-economic status. These partners went beyond MPS and included CESA#1, Milwaukee Succeeds, Schools That Can Milwaukee, and Teach For America, among others focused on how effective leadership can address educational issues. An annual event celebrating teachers and teaching provided a springboard to expand and deepen its mission while simultaneously celebrating the critical work that teachers do in all of our schools.

The EDGM has become a highly visible initiative that has garnered unequivocal respect from public and private educational, organization and civic leaders as a sought-after resource for:

  • Educational leadership issues and best practices;
  • A convener of diverse stakeholders in urban education issues seeking public policy solutions that address the needs of district, charter and choice schools;
  • As a catalyst for improving teacher preparation and pipeline expansion.
