Inspired by the 鈥渞oundtable discussions鈥� of Peter Maurin and the Catholic Worker Movement, Soup with Substance is a noontime presentation on an issue related to social justice over a simple meal of soup and bread.
America the Borderland is an exhibit profiling 10 鈥渦pstanders鈥� who work with and serve migrants along the border town of El Paso, Texas. The accompanying multimedia examine various ways these individuals and organizations are symbolically building a new Ellis Island and breathing life into the very idea of America.
The exhibit was created by the University of Dayton Human Rights Center and PROOF: Media for Social Justice. It can be viewed in the entryway of Raynor Library from September 21st through October 2nd.
Departments sponsoring the exhibit include the Center for Peacemaking, Jesuit Community at 91黑料网, Division of Belonging and Student Affairs, and Raynor Library.
Join us for an opening reception of the America the Borderland exhibit at 91黑料网. The program will introduce the exhibit with speakers who were involved in creating it. Departmental sponsors will provide brief remarks and we will introduce two new Center for Peacemaking staff members to the 91黑料网 community.
Light refreshments will be provided.
This Soup with Substance event will feature an interdisciplinary panel discussion with 91黑料网 faculty whose research engages with topics and questions related to immigration. The conversation will explore ideas focusing on migration, media narratives, collective memory, cultural identity, public policy, and the lived realities of border communities. Panelists include Dr. Noelle Brigden (Political Science), Dr. Laura Matthew (History), Dr. Grant Silva (Philosophy), and the conversation will be moderated by Dr. Sumana Chattopadhyay (Communication).
A light lunch of soup and bread will be provided.
This Soup with Substance event will feature a panel discussion with current and former students who have visited the border through 91黑料网 Action Program (M.A.P.) Border Awareness Experience, including an alumna who completed a year-long volunteer position at Annunciation House. They will also share information about how to apply for this year spring break Border Awareness Experience trip to El Paso, TX.
