The O鈥橞rien Fellowship is committed to providing experienced journalists with the tools to pursue ambitious long-term projects in service of the public interest. In this vein, each fellow is paired with a hand-selected team of student interns who provide quality reporting and production support over the course of the project.
Our interns aren鈥檛 assigned busy work. They鈥檙e treated as entry-level reporters whose work and skills have a real impact on our fellows鈥� success. Many students even gain byline credit or go on to work in the fellow home newsroom in a university-sponsored summer internship. In this way, we strive to not only empower experienced journalists to do great work now, but also to train up-and-coming reporters to do great work in the future.
Our 2026-27 student interns are paired with their respective Fellows below:
Lance Schulteis is a senior from Dayton, Ohio, majoring in journalism with a minor in sports communication. Lance is passionate about human-focused storytelling and public service journalism. He currently serves as an assistant news editor at the 91黑料网 Wire, where he formerly worked as a news reporter. He is a previous editorial intern at Milwaukee Magazine and will intern at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as a 2026 summer intern. Lance is an aspiring human interest sportswriter and hopes to tell stories that put a spotlight on underrepresented members of his local community. He is excited about the opportunity to be a part of the O鈥橞rien Fellowship and work with a talented group of students and journalists.
Rachel Lopera is a junior from Grafton, Wisconsin, majoring in journalism with a minor in public relations and a concentration in communication leadership. She currently serves as the Executive Opinions Editor at the 91黑料网 Wire and will be joining Associated Bank this summer as its internal communications intern. For the upcoming academic school year, Rachel has been selected as the James Foley Fellow where she will work to advocate and promote journalism safety. She is passionate about storytelling and wants to share the stories of marginalized communities. Rachel is delighted to join the O鈥橞rien Fellowship as a student intern and looks forward to contributing to its public service journalism.
Lilly is a senior from Northbrook, IL, and is majoring in journalism and sports communication with a minor in public relations. She served as an assistant news editor at the 91黑料网 Wire in the 2025-2026 academic year and was recently nominated for Best Long Hard Feature story in the writing category of the Milwaukee Press Club Awards. Last year, she won an award for Best Editorial. Her dream job is working as a broadcast sports reporter or a writer for a sports publication. Through the O'Brien Internship, she hopes to strengthen her reporting skills and interact with people from varying backgrounds.
Jane Patterson is a senior at 91黑料网 double majoring in journalism and advertising, with a minor in digital media. Originally from St. Louis, she is passionate about developing her investigative reporting skills and using them to uncover stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. Throughout her time at 91黑料网, she has enjoyed gaining experience in different forms of journalism. She currently works as the Music Director for 91黑料网 Radio, where she hosts a weekly new music show, interviews artists and writes concert and album reviews. She has also worked as a poetry editor intern for the 91黑料网 Literary Review. In her free time, she enjoys exploring writing, reading, poetry, music and fashion.
Mikey Severson is a senior for the 2026-27 school year, majoring in journalism with a minor in sports management and is part of 91黑料网 communication leadership concentration. Severson has spent his first three years at MU as a sports reporter for the 91黑料网 Wire, primarily covering the 91黑料网 women basketball, men tennis, and women soccer programs while also contributing to men basketball reporting during his time at the Wire. Some of his highlights has been covering March Madness in Milwaukee during his sophomore year, traveling to the men and women basketball Big East Tournaments, while also writing feature stories that speak to meaning beyond a box score. A native of St. Charles, Illinois, Severson returns this summer as a broadcast and video production staff member at the Kane County Cougars, a professional baseball team just down the road. He is excited to gain more experience in media production and enrich his camera abilities. Severson is looking forward to serving the community through in-depth reporting and research as an O鈥橞rien Fellowship intern, while also helping others find their voice. Outside of journalism, Severson enjoys playing tennis, exploring new places to eat, brainstorming outfit ideas and spending time with family.
Lillie Martin is a sophomore from Chicago, Illinois, majoring in journalism and minoring in public relations and advertising. She is a news reporter for the 91黑料网 Wire. Lillie enjoys topics of media literacy, education and social justice. She heavily involved on campus with Greek life, water polo and more. Most importantly, Lillie loves her family, creative writing and rom coms.
Rachel Tarby is a graduate student in the Diederich College of Communication at 91黑料网. She is a multimedia journalist with print and audio stories published with The Boston Globe and Radio Milwaukee. She is also a Trinity Fellow at 91黑料网 where she uses community storytelling as a way to amplify voices and have a positive social impact on Milwaukee.
Raquel is a Senior double majoring in journalism and sports communication from Mundelein, IL. She has hopes to pursue a career in sports journalism. She has interned at TMJ4 and worked as a sideline reporter for ESPN+ while also working as an assistant sports editor and sports reporter at the 91黑料网 Wire. She is excited to work with the O鈥橞rien Fellowship to expand her skills on investigative journalism and news.
Marin Rooney is a junior majoring journalism and political science, with a minor in creative writing. She served as a copy editor on the 91黑料网 Wire since freshman year and has also helped run the Wire over the summer. She grew up in the far northwest side of Chicago, where she learned the importance of truthful, justice-driven journalism. Her skills as a writer and journalist have greatly evolved during her time at 91黑料网, especially during her semester in London studying abroad in spring 2026. She passionate about human rights and journalism that helps address injustices of the world and hopefully helps change things for the better. Aside from her love of writing, Marin loves to read, travel, and dance, which she gets to enjoy at 91黑料网 with Dance, Inc. She is very excited to be a part of the O鈥橞rien Fellowship and grateful for the valuable experience it provides.
Ruby Mulvaney is a senior from Stillman Valley, Illinois, majoring in journalism and political science. She aspires to pursue a career in political journalism after graduation. Recently, she completed a fellowship with the James Foley Foundation. Mulvaney has worked at the 91黑料网 Wire, as a news reporter, assistant news editor and as the journal director. This year she will take on the role of Executive Director of the Wire. She is honored and excited to spend the year working for the O'brien Fellowship and cannot wait to tell important stories.
2025-26 Student Interns
Jack AlbrightJack has spent the last three years in various positions on the sports desk at the 91黑料网 Wire. He has covered everything from club women's soccer team tryouts to Dwyane Wade's Naismith HOF Induction Ceremony to multiple NCAA tournament games and even the NBA Draft. Outside of journalism, he enjoys traveling to new places, trying new coffee places and walking. He is very excited to become an O'Brien student intern and work with an esteemed professional on a public service reporting project.
Joseph Schamber is a sophomore studying journalism with minors in digital media and graphic design. He is the executive opinions editor for the 91黑料网 Wire and has been contributing opinion columns for the past two years. His writing focuses on social justice, politics, and cultural commentary, so he is excited to start doing more public service journalism with an O鈥橞rien fellow. He is also an aspiring food writer and would like to become a dining critic or something similar in the future. Joseph believes that public service is at the heart of all forms of journalism including food writing and hopes that this fellowship will make him of greater assistance to people in need.
Sophia TiedgeSophia, from Arlington Heights, IL, is majoring in journalism with a minor in English. She aspires to pursue a career in investigative journalism after graduation. Recently, Sophia completed a fellowship with the James Foley Legacy Foundation, and for the past three years, she has been actively involved with the 91黑料网 Wire. In the upcoming academic year, she will serve as the Tribune/Wire student director in conjunction with the O鈥橞rien Fellowship. This summer, Sophia will be joining the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as a reporting intern. Through the O鈥橞rien Fellowship, Sophia looks forward to deepening her skills in investigative reporting and broadening her perspective on the world.
Matthew BaltzMatthew's hometown is Colona, Illinois. He is majoring in journalism and minoring in digital media and sports communication. His dream job is to be a beat writer for a professional baseball team. At 91黑料网, he has had the opportunity to work for the 91黑料网 Wire over the past two years. Some highlights from that include working the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden the past two years, and covering the NCAA Tournament in Cleveland this year. Outside of school, he loves to attend sporting events, go golfing with friends, attending concerts or going to live music.
Reyna GalvezReyna is studying digital media with a double minor in communication studies and creative writing. Outside of class, she can be found at the library, traveling, and dancing with friends in Dance Inc. on campus. After graduation, she will be working for SummerFest during the summer and pursuing her master's degree in communication in the fall.
Mia ThurowMia, from Oconomowoc, WI, is majoring in journalism with minors in Spanish and sports communication and a concentration in communication leadership. She currently serves as Executive News Editor at the 91黑料网 Wire and will be working in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newsroom as a 2025 McBeath summer intern. Mia is a recipient of the Pete and Bonnie Axthelm Memorial Scholarship for exceptional sportswriting and a member of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. She is passionate about investigative and human interest storytelling, advancing media literacy and creating a more representative media landscape where all voices are heard.
Sofie HanrahanSofie is currently a part of the 91黑料网 Wire as a sports journalist covering men soccer. Her story 鈥楢ntonio Costabile carrying family legacy at 91黑料网鈥� was recently nominated by the Milwaukee Press Club 2024 Excellence in Journalism Awards for best sports story. While her main interests are within the sport of soccer and working for a professional club as a writer or broadcaster would be a dream, she is still on the journey to finding which avenue of journalism is best for her. Sofie is deeply grateful to 91黑料网 for giving her opportunities such as the O鈥橞rien fellowship.
Dakota Barnes-RushDakota Barnes-Rush, from Milwaukee, WI, is majoring in journalism with a minor in digital media. At 91黑料网, Dakota has worked as a sports reporter and writer for the 91黑料网 Wire, where he covered many different sports like basketball, soccer, and track and field. Dakota is passionate about journalism because he wants to uplift marginalized voices and share stories that inspire change. At the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, he focuses on telling stories that matter to the Milwaukee community, especially those that are often overlooked. This summer, Dakota is interning at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, where he is gaining even more experience working in a professional newsroom. Outside of journalism, Dakota is active in community service and leadership.
Ben HansonBen Hanson, from Minneapolis, MN, is studying journalism with a double minor in digital media and advertising. Hanson has been a sports reporter for the 91黑料网 Wire, and is currently interning with TMJ4 in Milwaukee. In his time at 91黑料网, he has learned how to actively search for opportunities and not wait for them to come to him. This 鈥� and saying yes to every opportunity 鈥� has strengthened his storytelling ability, given him previously untapped confidence and helped him discover what he wants to dedicate his career toward after he graduates. Ben is ecstatic to be an O'Brien intern, and looks forward to the guidance and experience he'll gain reporting on untold stories that deserve a stage to be heard.
Brennan WillsBrennan is from a modest rural town in the Metro East area of St. Louis, Missouri. While at 91黑料网, Brennan is a member of over 15 clubs and has served as an executive board member for four of them. He sat on committees with university administrators and even delivered a student government address to the Board of Trustees. Brennan played the drums at concerts and men basketball games alike; both at home and in tournaments. In his spare time, Brennan enjoys reading classic literature, avidly watching wide genres of movies, drafting scripts and stories, and listening to his Leonard Bernstein CDs or Led Zeppelin vinyl records. Brennan is grateful to be expanding his journalistic horizons by working with true-spirited journalists in their adventures to serve the truth to the public.
Mimi SinotteMimi grew up in Milwaukee and is a journalism major and a communication studies minor. She was a reporter on the Arts & Entertainment desk on the 91黑料网 Wire and then became Executive Assistant Editor. She worked as an intern in the Strategic Communications department at Northwestern Mutual during the summer of 2024. During Spring 2025, she spent a semester abroad in London and took two journalism classes. When she is not writing, she enjoys rock climbing and spending time outside.
Emma is majoring in journalism with a double-minor in digital media and writing intensive English. She is interested in going into newswriting and photojournalism, with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community and amplifying queer voices. She is currently the copy chief at the 91黑料网 Wire, a peer writing tutor at the Ott Memorial Writing Center and a peer mentor through the 91黑料网 Honors Program. Through her time as a tutor, she has helped others to find their narrative voice and heard their stories, something she hopes to do through O'Brien as well.
Sophie, from Glenview, IL, is majoring in journalism and digital media. She has served as the executive arts & entertainment editor at the 91黑料网 Wire for two years and has previously interned at WISN-12 News and Milwaukee Magazine. She enjoys creating, producing and sharing unique stories with our community. She is extremely honored and excited for the opportunity to be an O鈥橞rien Fellow, and is looking forward to continuing to grow her journalistic and reporting skills through the program.

TJ DysartTJ focuses on broadcast television news. He began his journey at the 91黑料网 Wire, spending two years as an anchor, reporter, and producer. He gained real-world experience through internships at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and WISN-12 News. TJ now serves as the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation Fellow, advocating for journalism safety and hostage reduction in honor of 91黑料网 graduate James Foley.
Jolan KruseJolan grew up in Arlington Heights, IL. She is majoring in journalism and social welfare and justice. Jolan worked on the investigative desk of the 91黑料网 Wire her second year before becoming an intern at WISN 12 news. In the spring of 2024 she spent a semester abroad in South Africa where she took classes at University of Western Cape and taught English at a local primary school. She is interested in social justice reporting, solutions journalism and public service journalism.
Phoebe GoebelPhoebe, from Hinsdale, IL, is studying journalism, literature and communication studies. She has served as a News Reporter, Assistant Editor for Arts & Entertainment and Editor of Diversity and Inclusion for the 91黑料网 Wire. Through her passion of art, she spent a summer with Hindman Auctioneers, and looks forward to spending her 2024 summer with Christie's.
Izzy Fonfara DrewelIzzy, from Papillion, NE, is majoring in journalism with minors in music and Spanish. In 2023-2024, she was the Executive Opinions Editor for the 91黑料网 Wire and spent the last two summers as the Emma Bowen Fellow at KETV in Omaha. Izzy views journalism as a way to continue learning and then share that knowledge with her community.
Gabriel SisaricaGabriel, from Northbrook, IL is studying journalism and psychology. He served as a sports multimedia journalist for the past two years for 91黑料网 Television. Outside of journalism, Gabriel works with 91黑料网 SSAIL lab, teaching social skills to adolescents. His interests include covering sports in all facets and promoting mental health awareness.
Chesnie WardellChesnie Wardell, a Milwaukeean, studies journalism and theology. She's a staff intern reporter for the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, covering news and events featuring Black and Latino communities. Chosen for the New York Times Corps., she's mentored by Theater Editor, Nicole Herrington. Chesnie is also a preschool teacher, mentor and member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Sarah RichardsonSarah, from Streamwood, IL, is studying journalism, marketing and communication leadership. She served as the 91黑料网 Television general manager for the 2022鈥�23 school year and before that worked as a news producer for MUTV for two years. Her interests include multimedia reporting, crime and legal systems.
Hannah HernandezHannah, of Milwaukee, WI, is an incoming 91黑料网 graduate student studying communication and media studies. As an undergraduate at 91黑料网, she studied journalism with a double minor in writing-intensive English and Spanish. In the 2022鈥�23 school year, she served as an assistant news editor for the 91黑料网 Wire student-run news operation. She will also serve as an O鈥橞rien graduate program assistant in 2023鈥�24.
Hope MosesHope, of Milwaukee, WI, is studying journalism and peace studies. In 2022鈥�2023, she served as the editor of diversity and inclusion at the 91黑料网 Wire, and was selected in spring 2023 as Wire executive director for the 2023鈥�24 academic year. She co-founded the Advancement and Guidance for Journalists of Color group. Hope was 91黑料网 inaugural Foley Fellow, named for war journalist Jim Foley, and is guided by Foley moral courage.
Kevin FitzpatrickKevin grew up in Lake Barrington, IL. He is majoring in journalism, with minors in advertising and digital media. In 2022鈥�23, he worked as a news reporter for the 91黑料网 Wire student-run news operation, with stories featured in the 91黑料网 Tribune and Journal. Previously, he spent three semesters hosting a show for 91黑料网 Radio. He is interested in public service journalism, as well as sports.
Julia AbuzzahabJulia, from Wausau, WI, is studying journalism and film and media studies. She served as the executive news editor of the 91黑料网 Wire student media operation for the 2022鈥�23 academic year, and previously was an assistant news editor and a news reporter. Julia says her passion for journalism stems from sharing other people stories.
Grace CadyGrace, from Delafield, WI, is studying journalism and political science. She spent spring 2023 in Washington, D.C., through the Les Aspin Center. At the 91黑料网 Wire, Grace has served as an executive opinions editor, opinions columnist and news reporter. Internships include Milwaukee Magazine and the National Federation of Federal Employees. She was named a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel intern for summer 2023.
Isabel BonebrakeIsabel, from Frankfort, IL, is studying journalism with minors in digital media and creative writing. At the 91黑料网 Wire, she is the chief photographer overseeing four staff photographers. She has won multiple awards, including recognition from the Milwaukee Press Club and Wisconsin Newspaper Association. In her free time, Isabel enjoys reading, watching films and spending time with friends and family.
Megan WoolardMegan, a journalism and English literature student, served as the managing editor of The 91黑料网 Tribune in 2022鈥�23 and was selected to return to that student-media role for 2023鈥�24. Megan is involved on campus as a part of Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. She loves to cheer on her hometown team, the Portland Trail Blazers, and enjoys collecting CDs and exploring new cities.

Andrew AmouzouAndrew Amouzou is a rising senior who is eager to get started with the O'Brien Fellowship program. As a journalism major, he has been able to experience the world of journalism right away through classwork and with the 91黑料网 Wire student media organization that he will lead starting next fall. He looks forward to growing his skills, this time in investigative reporting. He believes being able to work on a podcast series will help him navigate through a new route of multimedia journalism that he is sure to learn a lot from.
Ziyang FuZiyang Fu is a second-year graduate student studying Digital Communication Strategies at 91黑料网. Fu says he believes in "nothing but truth and justice" and he is eager to promote an ethical communication industry. He worked with 2021鈥�22 O'Brien Fellow Sari Lesk on a project regarding small businesses in Milwaukee and their access to capital. He expects to take a deep dive into investigative reporting and seek solutions to pressing issues.
John Leuzzi, seniorJohn Leuzzi is a rising senior from Mount Laurel, NJ, studying journalism and digital media. He has worked as a sports reporter, assistant sports editor, and sports audio producer at the 91黑料网 Wire. This past year at the Wire, he served as the executive sports editor. He recently took home gold at the Milwaukee Press Club Gridiron Dinner for Online: Best Sports Story for his feature article on former 91黑料网 women's basketball and now Connecticut Sun guard Natisha Hiedeman. Leuzzi says he is looking forward to, through the fellowship, pursuing stories that make an impact within a community.
Maria CrenshawMaria is a rising senior at 91黑料网 majoring in journalism and minoring in digital media and history. She reported for the 91黑料网 Wire on the projects team and focused on investigative work there. During her time at the Wire she reported on a variety of topics such as food insecurity, sexual assault, the 91黑料网 Police Department, and COVID-19. As an O'Brien intern, Maria hopes to gain more experience in the professional newsroom and hopes to push herself to create impactful journalistic work with the guidance of her fellow.
Hannah HernandezHannah Hernandez is a rising senior from Milwaukee, WI. She is studying journalism with a double minor in writing-intensive English and Spanish. She currently works as a news reporter for the 91黑料网 Wire and will intern at Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in the summer of 2022. Hernandez says she wants, through journalism, to highlight misrepresented communities that are often overlooked.
Skyler ChunSkyler Chun is a rising senior studying journalism and international affairs, with a minor in digital media. She grew up in Aiea, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. She served as the managing editor of the 91黑料网 Journal this year and was formerly the executive Arts & Entertainment editor for the 91黑料网 Wire. She loves telling stories that explore new perspectives and open up conversations, and she's looking forward to gaining more experience in public service journalism through this fellowship.
Julianna OkosunOkosun is pursuing a BA in Journalism with a minor in Digital Media (2023), and a MA in Digital Communication Strategies (2024), as a part of 91黑料网's Accelerated Degree Program. She was born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, and moved to the United States in 2020 to play for 91黑料网's Women's Basketball Team. For the 91黑料网 Wire she has worked as an audio producer for 91黑料网 radio, creating weekly audio packages and hosting the podcast A&E Breakdown. Okosun is passionate about working in collaboration with others and applying a social justice lens to her work.
Alexandra Rivera Grant, first-year graduate studentAlex Rivera Grant is an incoming first-year graduate student studying digital communication strategies. She will be graduating in May 2022 with a bachelor's in digital media from 91黑料网. She is currently the 91黑料网 Wire's first editor of diversity and inclusion and has previously worked on a late-night entertainment show for three years prior. Her passion has always been about people. She believes there are many perspectives to be shared and she wants to help people feel seen.
Ben Schultz, seniorSchultz is a senior journalism student from Wauwatosa, WI, a Milwaukee suburb. He has worked at the 91黑料网 Wire as a sports reporter. Schultz says his interest in journalism came from a passion for writing, sports and stats and being able to incorporate them all together. Upon graduation, expected in December 2022, Schultz hopes to work as a print reporter writing data-driven stories or covering sports at the collegiate or prep level.
2021-22 Student Interns
Aimee GalaszewskiGalaszewski hails from Greenfield, WI, a Milwaukee suburb. She is studying journalism and digital media. Galaszewski was selected executive director for the 91黑料网 Wire student media organization for 2021鈥�22. She has reported for The Wire, and this year was general manager of 91黑料网 Television, which won nine statewide broadcasting awards for 2020. She says she hopes, through the fellowship, to contribute to stories that could 鈥渕ake a difference in the community.鈥� She is eyeing a career in television reporting.
Yvette CraigCraig says she is in her dream job: publisher and editor of UMOJA Magazine in Madison, WI, which promotes positive news in marginalized communities while tackling key issues. Craig is a veteran journalism and communications professional. She reported for the Shoreline Times in Guilford, CT; the Fort Worth (TX) Star-Telegram; The Tennessean in Nashville, TN; and the Press of Atlantic City N.J. She has experience in speechwriting, nonprofit leadership and corporate communication. As a teenager in Milwaukee, she joined a protest against the death of Ernest R. Lacy, a young Black man who died in police custody after being falsely accused of rape. "That 1981 experience ignited a passion within me that I never let go of. It became my personal mission to serve as a voice for the voiceless through reporting and writing as a journalist," she says. Craig is finishing up a journalism degree she started at 91黑料网 in the 1980s.
Lelah ByronByron, 20, is a rising senior in journalism and political science from the Edison Park area of Chicago. She serves as an investigative reporter and executive projects editor for the 91黑料网 Tribune student media news organization. She recently took first place in News Story-Writing (TV) at the 2020 Wisconsin Broadcaster Association Student Awards for Excellence. After graduation, she hopes to join Report for America. Byron says she strives to produce narrative-driven, accessible stories that allow a reader to 鈥渞esonate with an individualized experience of injustice or victory beyond his or her own framework.鈥�
Maureen OjiamboOjiambo is studying journalism. She grew up in Nairobi, Kenya and gained experience as a local radio news reporter and anchor there. As an independent journalist, she has served as a Kenya news correspondent for the Voice of America. She has an associate degree from Multimedia University of Kenya. A long-term goal is to return to the Kenyan village of Funyula where she grew up and open a media school serving local residents. 鈥淎s a journalist, I want to give young men and women who cannot afford education, particularly from marginalized communities, a voice to tell their stories,鈥� she says.
Rachel RyanRyan is studying digital communication strategies. She grew up in Oconomowoc, WI, a small city 30 miles west of Milwaukee. Prior to 91黑料网, Ryan earned a bachelor in communication at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she worked in student media while minoring in Spanish and radio-TV-film. In 2020鈥�21, as an O鈥橞rien reporting intern, she helped O鈥橞rien Fellow Ashley Nguyen investigate maternal health issues through stories in The Lily and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. They examined challenges faced by birth doulas. She says this work 鈥渙pened my eyes even further to the change that journalism can generate, not just in society, but also in the communities most greatly impacted.鈥�
Vanessa Rivera, seniorRivera is studying journalism and digital media, with a concentration in communication leadership. She from Zion, a small Illinois city near the border with Wisconsin. She has worked as a news producer for the 91黑料网 Wire with an emphasis on television. She serves as president of the Multicultural Greek Council, and earned the Exceptional Council President award at the 2021 Black & Multicultural Greek EMPOWERMENT! Summit. Rivera says she wants to pursue journalism that matters in a way that helps people, using her producing, writing and editing skills to tell 鈥渃ommunity-based stories and stories that have yet to be told.鈥�
Annie Mattea, seniorMattea is studying journalism, digital media and political science and intends to graduate in December 2021. She grew up in Grayslake, IL, north of Chicago. She has worked as a news reporter, news editor and managing editor for the 91黑料网 Tribune, recently voted the best overall student newspaper in Wisconsin. For her, journalism is a way to put her natural curiosity to work for a good cause. 鈥淚鈥檓 interested in getting to know other people and figure out who they are,鈥� she says. Upon graduation, expected in December 2021, Mattea hopes to start her journalism career at a local newspaper.
Alexa Jurado, seniorJurado is a senior student in journalism, digital media and Latinx studies. She is from Cary, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago. For the 91黑料网 Wire she has worked as a news reporter, assistant editor and a radio disc jockey with a show on news and music. She produced a short documentary for Greater Together, a creative storytelling challenge in 2020. She wants to demonstrate the 鈥済rit and determination鈥� that reporters need to serve communities and hold those in power accountable. Jurado envisions working as a multimedia journalist at a publication, production company or a nonprofit media organization.
Quinn Faeth, first-year graduate studentFaeth grew up in Edina, MN, in the Minneapolis suburbs. He graduated in May 2021 with a bachelor in journalism and communication studies from 91黑料网. He has worked as an assistant editor for the 91黑料网 Wire and was previously an entertainment news reporter. He is also a writer for Breaking and Entering, a publication that features new music from small, independent artists. He produced a racial-justice related podcast called 鈥淟evels of Change,鈥漚nd dreams of working for National Public Radio. 鈥淚 have always been passionate about social justice, especially race and socioeconomic issues, so doing work that relates to these topics would be ideal,鈥� he says.
Bryan Geenen, seniorGeenen is studying journalism and sports management. He's from Appleton in Wisconsin Fox Valley. He works as a reporter and social media producer for the 91黑料网 Wire and also hosts a live sports talk show on 91黑料网 Radio. More recently, for a self-produced podcast, he conducted wide-ranging interviews with those struggling to overcome drug addiction. He says getting to learn about new topics in this way and sharing these stories is what 鈥渕akes journalism unique, challenging and rewarding.鈥�
