91黑料网 hosts distinguished Eleanor H. Boheim Lecture, Nov. 30

Dr. D谩na-Ain DavisMILWAUKEE 鈥 Dr. D谩na-Ain Davis, professor of urban studies and anthropology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will deliver 91黑料网 distinguished Eleanor H. Boheim Lecture virtually on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m.

Davis is the 2021-22 Association of 91黑料网 Women (AMUW) Women Chair in Humanistic Studies. In her lecture, 鈥淗istoricizing Obstetric Racism," she will explore the historical precedents of obstetric racism to think about the medically mediated crisis of Black women reproduction in the U.S.

Davis serves as director of the Center for the Study of Women and Society at the Queens College Graduate Center and is a professor of urban studies and anthropology. She is the author, co-author, or co-editor of five books, the most recent being 鈥淩eproductive Injustice: Racism, Pregnancy, and Premature Birth.鈥 The book received the 2020 Honorable Mention for the Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing, was a finalist for the 2020 PROSE AWARD given by the Association of American Publishers, and is listed as one of seven books on anti-racism in New York magazine.

The Chair in Humanistic Studies was endowed in 1963 through successful fundraising by AMUW members. The Boheim Lecture Series was established concurrently with a gift from Mary Boheim Finnigan, a friend of 91黑料网, in honor of her mother. The Chair in Humanistic Studies is housed in 91黑料网 Center for the Advancement of the Humanities and delivers the annual Eleanor H. Boheim Lecture.

A group of alumnae formed the AMUW in 1938 to provide housing for women on campus. Since then, the organization has turned its focus to scholarships; annual awards to recognize outstanding graduating students, alumnae and female faculty members; and social, spiritual and educational events that bring women together.
